About Baltic Countries
The 3 Baltic Countries, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, occupy the area between Russia and Poland, along the Baltic Sea opposite Sweden and Finland. They are gentle lands without extremes of weather or geography; with maritime climates and abundant rivers and lakes amongst rolling hills. All three countries are EU and NATO members.
About Baltic Languages
The region was settled in prehistoric times by tribes from two distinct linguistic groups. Estonia, furthest north, was settled by Finno-Ugric speakers similar to the settlers of nearby Finland, and the two languages are mutually intelligible. Hungary is the only other EU country in the Finno-Ugric language group, whose remarkable origins stretch far back into Siberia.
In contrast, Latvia, just south of Estonia, and Lithuania, between Latvia and Poland, were populated by Indo-Europeans; their languages are similar to each other, like Italian and Spanish. These languages are extremely well preserved, retaining archaic features similar to ancient Latin and Greek.
