United Kingdom: School of Applied Linguistic & Language Studies, University of Dundee

The University of Dundee is recognised as one of Scotland's leading universities with a powerful research reputation, particularly in the medical and life sciences. Founded in 1881 as University College, Dundee University was, for many years, a part of the University of St. Andrews, becoming an independent university in its own right in 1967. Three mergers have doubled the university's size over the last ten years and changed the institution dramatically, extending the range of activities to include art and design, nursing and teacher education as well as the full range of academic disciplines. The University of Dundee has nearly 12,500 Students (including 1,700 distance learning) across six faculties.

The University of Dundee has over 3,000 employees. The recently-awarded title of 'The UK's fastest developing university for Enterprise and Innovation' aptly sums up what Dundee is all about. Our contribution to knowledge in subjects as diverse as medicine, microelectronics, fine art and design, digital media, engineering, law, dentistry and even space exploration is recognised throughout academic circles in the UK and beyond. The School of Applied Linguistic & Language Studies (SALLS) is one of the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom and provides language and intercultural learning opportunities for all students at the University and within the community at large. Two members of staff from SALLS will be involved in the project.

The School of Applied Linguistic & Language Studies has a long-established reputation for running language courses at all levels for university students and members of the public. Educational collaboration agreements include international student exchanges with the universities of Cologne, Freiburg, Grenoble, and Jaen while on the commercial front in 2001 the School was involved in an expert capacity advising a French Internet start-up company on best-practice in the methodology, design and quality assurance aspects of a project to teach business English over the Internet. The School is also currently involved in an EU Leonardo project creating professional English language learning content to aid worker mobility across Europe. The role on that project (evaluation and quality assurance) is similar to the one played on this project.
